?Cyborg? Santos wants her shot at Ronda Rousey

Strikeforce bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey will attempt to defend her belt on Saturday against Sarah Kaufman. Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, the former featherweight champ, would like the next shot at Rousey.

"I really wanna fight Ronda," she said on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour. "I really want to. She says bad things about me. I never say bad things about my opponent. I want to do my best in the octagon, and if she says she wants to fight me, she can come to my weight or at 140."

Of course, there are a few problems with this potential match-up. For one, Santos is suspended through mid-December. Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC and Strikeforce, has shown reluctance in setting up fights for suspended fighters in the past because there is too much risk. Promoting a fight on the hopes a fighter can get a license is just begging for trouble.

Secondly, why would Rousey move up? It's Santos making the challenge. If she wants to fight Rousey, she should drop down to 135 -- and therein lies the problem. Santos has never weighed in lower than 135. For her bout with Hitomi Akano, she weighed in 7 lbs. over. Don't expect 135 to happen. Rousey competed in the Olympics at 154 lbs. and has fought at featherweight, but has been so comfortable at bantamweight that she won the belt there.

Do you think Rousey should move up to fight Santos? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Pascale Obolo, the 7th art in the plural

Pascale Obolo, the 7th art in the plural

The guest star of our Cultural column, Arts & Entertainment this month is a filmmaker gifted with the masterful tact, Pascale Obolo, in what follows gives us a better view of her person and productions ...
Flashmag: Hello Pascale is a real pleasure to have you as Flashmag invitee, ?this month. The time of this interview our gallery is yours. your? ambition in the film making how ?was it born? what led you to the? seventh art and why this choice?
Pascale Obolo: being activist I used cinema as a weapon to defend my ideas, since cinema is a very strong universal language that touches the entire world. All of us we are more or less fascinated by images. Specially today where the image is omnipresent in the societies in which we live (computer, TV, phone...)
The cinema also represented a means of escape. Tell stories recreate an imaginary world where I could make the African youth dream, by giving them some hope. With the magic of cinema we could, for a moment forget the negative image that overlooked Africa.
Flashmag: as a woman and African Moreover, how do you feel about being filmmaker? Is there a particular key in how you approach the subjects you realize?

Pascale Obolo:it is in the choice of thematic addressed in my work I feel the difference and also the way to realize the films. There is more emotion and poetry in my visual work. I?m more interested and more sensitive, to experience an aestheticizing cinematic language.
Flashmag: also, did the great ladies of cinema as Jane Campion, or Euzhan Palcy have influenced you or influence you in your style? In what school do you belong as a filmmaker, classical drama, impressionism or realism, how do you define your style?
Pascale Obolo: I come from experimental cinema. Artists like Bill Viola, Nane Jun Paik, Barbara Hammer, or Spike Lee, have influenced my cinema
Flashmag: Speaking of your accomplishments with the film Calypso, you seem to pay particular attention to the documentary series about the dances and rhythms of Trinidad and Tobago an island, which is like your second home why?
Pascale Obolo: The Calypso is a music style and not just a dance to start with. I have done a lot

of film in Trinidad because what interested me in this work was: how people travel or emigrate from one country to another with their culture to recreate another form of mixed culture. The calypso is the mixture between the music of slaves (African music) and music of the white masters (the minuet). My last film calypso Rose: the lioness of the jungle is talking about the first female queen of calypso, whom most of her songs were used by the first feminist movement in Trinidad, created by university women. This film is a kind of road movie that takes place in Trinidad &Tobago, New York, Paris and Benin. In each city we discover a facet of the incredible story of a diva who is in sum the cultural ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago.
Flashmag: A graduate from the Conservatoire Libre du Cinema and the French University of Paris (Paris 8), you are one of the very first person who made a documentary on urban music hip-hop, R & B and graffiti art, you settled as a forward-thinking, you like this maxim "I? am in resistance because I? am in phase of activism" what this implies?
Pascale Obolo: I grew up in hip hop culture. So I got started with my mates documenting people with whom I was hanging out. During my university studies, I was filming my group named ?the ladies night ?and my friends were making graffiti.
Flashmag: Speaking of your newest release The Invisible Woman based on the novel of the African American Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, you put forward the existentialist problems of black women in Western society with some bravado, today what do you think of the place of black women in society in general what must be done to make them more visible?

Pascale Obolo: we women we must continue to demand more equality and justice. In front of societies, which are becoming increasingly conservative. We must continue to remain vigilant to preserve the rights acquired. In my film the invisible woman: philosophic visual test. I speak of the invisibility of the black individual, in French society. As in the book of Ralph Elisson, where he deals with the theme of invisibility of the black man in the American society of 1952.
Flashmag:we are used to acknowledge rightly or wrongly that Black women feminist and intellectual are the cause, of unrest in the marital home, by advocating, rebellion of the fairer sex what do you think about? Can one be a woman without being a feminist in my opinion it seems a self-defense as it is not disproportionate How about that?
Pascale Obolo: in my case, it?s very difficult for me to be a woman without being feminist as well. I need both to exist and fully accomplish my task.
Flashmag: In the purely cinematic point, what do you think of the place of blacks in the world of the seventh art today? Many ?believe that the way blacks are portrayed thus gives in general a pejorative vision of the black race what ?can you say about? Would it be bonded to the perception of those who finance the 7th art? Some mention here the perpetual debate between art and its funding what would you say?
Pascale Obolo: all depends on what film industry you're talking about? If it?s the one of the diaspora in France, it is very pejorative a caricature at the limit.
black filmmakers have to take themselves in charge. Write their own scenario if they want to exist in the French cinema. They have to master all the cinematic chain. (Writing, directing, production and distribution). We need to find our own sources of finances. Reinvent a cinema of quality even without large financial means.
Flashmag: what about the rise of cinema in Africa with Nollywood which is becoming a stronghold of the film industry, producing even more films than Hollywood the past year they produced about 500 films while Nollywood produced more than 1,000 during the same period? The digital age would have anything to do with this expansion in quantity and quality? Besides do you think that mastering the technology and methods of funding would finally give black artists, the opportunity to make the films they want? And contribute to give a truer picture of their person and continent of origin?
Pascale Obolo: new technologies have facilitated the evolution of cinema inNigeria. The ?growth of Nollywood in the whole of Africa is very good. This ?proves that Africa can also have a very powerful film industry. Too bad for now it concerns only, the cinema of entertainment. It ?should also support the development of authors cinema ?and documentary of creation.
Indeed, the mastery of technology and new funding mode other than the European one, will allow? ?African artist to develop their own cinema
Flashmag:to close this debate do you have a special mention to the public? A word about your future achievements, and your medium-term program? Where are available your movies?
Pascale Obolo: I just founded with Carole Diop, Afrikadaa an online journal of contemporary art whose goal is to make a spotlight on artists and spaces for contemporary art. This is also the first francophone interactive magazine dedicated to current black productions. This platform is a laboratory, a unique ?virtual art space, where intellectuals, philosophers and artists of today come to talk, compare, and explain their work and offer reflections on art. Its ambition is to realize the richness of the African continent and the black Diasporas in contemporary art, design and architecture. Rethinking contemporary art by building bridges between artists and intellectuals. But also support and discover new artists through the exhibition set up by the magazine.
My movie Calypso Rose the lioness of the jungle opened? the black women film festival in San Francisco on July 20. I hope your readers? within the bay area, attended this fantastic festival. The film is? also scheduled to be viewed during the ?festival of the island of Groix August 24th.
Flashmag:Pascale Obolo Flashmag its readership and thank you for this interview

Report: US offers Taliban more for captive soldier

IntelCenter / AFP - Getty Images

This still image provided by IntelCenter on December 7, 2010, appears to show U.S. Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl (left). He disappeared from his base in southern Afghanistan in June 2009 and is believed to be being held by Taliban militants in Pakistan.

By Missy Ryan, Reuters

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration, in a move aimed at reviving Afghan peace talks, has sweetened a proposed deal under which it would transfer Taliban detainees from Guantanamo Bay prison in exchange for a U.S. soldier held by Taliban allies in Pakistan.

The revised proposal, a concession from an earlier U.S. offer, would alter the sequence of the move of five senior Taliban figures held for years at the U.S. military prison to the Gulf state of Qatar, sources familiar with the issue said.

U.S. officials have hoped the prisoner exchange, proposed as a good-faith move in initial discussions between U.S. negotiators and Taliban officials, would open the door to peace talks between militants and the government of Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

The revised proposal would send all five Taliban prisoners to Qatar first, said sources who spoke on condition of anonymity. Only then would the Taliban be required to release Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, the only U.S. prisoner of war.

'Frustrated': Dad of Taliban prisoner Bowe Bergdahl takes matters into own hands

Previously, U.S. officials had proposed dividing the Taliban prisoners into two groups, and requiring Bergdahl's release as a good-faith gesture to come before the second group of prisoners would be moved out of Guantanamo.

Bergdahl, now 26 years old, disappeared from his base in southern Afghanistan in June 2009 and is believed to be being held by Taliban militants in northwestern Pakistan.

The White House and the Bergdahl family declined to comment on the revised proposal for a deal.

April 7, 2010: Rachel Maddow reports the breaking news of a video released by the Taliban which they claim is captured U.S. soldier Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl.

The altered transfer plans were discussed with Qatari officials during a visit in mid-June by Marc Grossman, President Barack Obama's special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, the sources said. It was unclear if the altered proposal had been put forward before those discussions.

Qatar, which is hosting a number of Taliban officials, has played a key role in almost two years of initial, secret discussions between U.S. officials and representatives of the shadowy militant group, which remains a formidable enemy in Afghanistan even as U.S. and NATO troops begin to withdraw.

As part of a process the Obama administration hoped would lead to substantive talks on Afghanistan's future, the Taliban's leadership had planned to formally open a political office in Doha. But the Taliban announced in March it would withdraw from the talks, citing what it said were inconsistencies in the U.S. negotiating position.

U.S. officials are now cautiously seeking to prepare the ground for a resumption in talks. But any negotiations involving the Taliban, even preliminary ones, could pose a political risk for Obama months before the U.S. presidential election.

Dec. 26, 2009: A new video of Private First Class Bowe Bergdahl has just been released, and as KTVB's Scott Evans reports, residents in the soldier's hometown of Hailey, Idaho, are "trying to stay positive."

The proposed prisoner transfer was first reported in December by Reuters.

Necessary evil?
The Taliban detainees are seen as among the most dangerous remaining at Guantanamo, and the transfer idea drew strong opposition on Capitol Hill even before it was formally proposed.

Many lawmakers fretted that transferred detainees would reappear on the battlefield, and objected to the possible release of prisoners blamed for bloody crimes in Afghanistan.

U.S. officials stress that the transfer, if it occurs, will be done in accordance with U.S. law, which requires Congress to be notified before any detainees are moved from Guantanamo.

John Moore / Getty Images

President Obama's one-year deadline to close the facility has long passed as shutting it down has proven complicated and controversial.

The transfer of the prisoners has long been seen as a necessary evil by U.S. negotiators in their effort to coax the Taliban into talks.

Report: Secret US program releases Afghan insurgents in exchange for peace pledges

The militant group has long demanded their release, but the Pentagon, which handles detainee transfers, is particularly skeptical of a move officials there fear might not only fail to bring the Taliban to the negotiating table but also lead to the department being blamed for moving dangerous militants out of prison.

According to a report released early this year from the House Armed Services Committee, more than one in four of the 600 former detainees moved from Guantanamo to countries like Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, or Yemen were confirmed or suspected to subsequently be engaged in 'terrorist activities.'

Dec. 25, 2009: The family of Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl pleaded for the release of their son after the Taliban released a video of the infantryman in captivity. CNBC's Carl Quintanilla reports.

Democrats accused the committee's majority Republicans of fear-mongering when they released that report.

Of the five senior Taliban figures, many officials and lawmakers are particularly nervous about transferring Mullah Mohammed Fazl, a "high-risk detainee" who was in the first group sent to Guantanamo in early 2002, under what could be only loose security and travel restrictions.

UK cops to probe 'allegations of complicity to torture' prisoner at Guantanamo Bay

A former Taliban deputy minister of defense, Fazl is alleged to be responsible for the massacre of thousands of minority Shiites.

The group also includes Noorullah Noori, a former top military commander; former deputy intelligence minister Abdul Haq Wasiq; and Khairullah Khairkhwa, a former interior minister.

The identity of the fifth detainee remains unclear.

July 19, 2009: The kidnapped man, 23-year-old Pfc. Bowe R. Bergdahl of Ketchum, Idaho, appears in a 28-minute video, telling his captors, "I'm scared." NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.

While a debate continues to rage within the U.S. administration about the wisdom of peace talks with the Taliban, Afghanistan experts see few other options for achieving even a modicum of stability in a region plagued by civil conflict for decades.

The Taliban may have been weakened by Obama's 2009-2010 troop surge into Afghanistan, but it remains a potent enemy as the foreign force grows smaller. It is also deeply mistrustful of U.S. overtures and has appeared this year to grapple with its own divisions.

How I see America, from a former Gitmo prisoner

In early 2012, Western officials say, the Taliban's reclusive leaders struggled to contain a backlash from mid-level militants who opposed talking to the West. While they appear to have mostly succeeded in containing that response, even a start to real peace talks could still be years away.

Even so, analysts say there are signs that the Taliban leadership, based in Pakistan, may now be more open to a negotiated settlement, and these have included the appearance of a senior Taliban figure at a recent conference in Japan.

"The Taliban doesn't want a vacuum in Afghanistan or a civil war with the North they know they can't win," said Ahmed Rashid, a prominent Pakistani author and expert on the Taliban, referring to powerful northern warlords who battled the Taliban in the 1990s and continue to wield power in Afghanistan.

"The elements that have been dealing with the U.S. government basically want a deal."

myVidster: A Victory for Innovation and a Vote for Sensible Copyright ...

Last week, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals issued an opinion in Flava Works v. myVidster, a case that raises questions about embedded videos and copyright infringement. Judge Richard Posner, who wrote the opinion, has a reputation for producing memorable and influential ruling, and this one is no exception. (You might remember that Judge Posner also recently issued an important ruling in a patent case between Apple and Motorola.) In reversing the injunction granted against myVidster, the Seventh Circuit wholly rejected the premise that embedding, linking to, or watching infringing videos constitutes infringement itself.

First, some background: Flava Works, a video company that makes full-length videos available only behind a paywall, sued MyVidster, a social video bookmarking site that allows users to save videos to a profile and share pages containing embedded videos with other users. Last summer, the district court sided with Flava Works and granted an injunction. The district court got it wrong on at least two counts. First, the Court failed to apply the appropriate standard for injunctive relief and second, the Court mistakenly found that myVidster?s users infringed Flava Work?s copyrights.

Fortunately, the Seventh Circuit agreed.

First, though the standard for an injunction may seem like an obscure procedural point of dispute, it?s an important one. When out of balance, it can have a profound chilling effect on free speech and innovation. In fact, we made this very argument in an amicus brief we filed along with Public Knowledge:

Many of these nascent entities cannot survive an extended interruption of operations pending lengthy litigation. An unbalanced standard for preliminary injunctions in copyright litigation therefore can easily chill innovation, as services are effectively put out of business long before a court can ever reach a determination on the merits of the infringement claim.

As to the substantive issue of infringement, the Court held that embedding videos does not constitute infringement. Simply put, people who download Flava Works videos and then re-upload them to another server (thereby making a copy of the video) may be infringers, but neither myVidster nor the users who watch videos embedded on its site are engaging in or contributing to infringement. From the decision:

myVidster is not an infringer, at least in the form of copying or distributing copies of copyrighted work. The infringers are the uploaders of copyrighted work.

In the ruling, Judge Posner also draws the meaningful distinction between copyright infringement, theft, and other actions that may reduce a company's income. Rhetoric from the copyright lobby often conflates these disparate concepts. An op-ed in the New York Times made the point earlier this year: ?We should stop trying to shoehorn the 21st-century problem of illegal downloading into a moral and legal regime that was developed with a pre- or mid-20th-century economy in mind.?

For example, as Judge Posner wrote, a Flava Works employee embezzling corporate funds may be stealing and reducing the company?s income, but he is not infringing copyright. A person who sneaks into a movie theater to watch a copyrighted movie ? like one who bypasses the Flava Works paywall by watching embedded videos on myVidster ? isn?t infringing, either. Stealing a book from a bookstore and reading it ?is a bad thing to do,? says Judge Posner, but again it is not copyright infringement. Considering how companies have abused copyright law for years to squelch competition and silence unflattering speech, this recognition is a major one.

A final remarkable fact about this myVidster decision is how it compares to another decision Judge Posner wrote nearly a decade ago. The Aimster decision found that an injunction could be granted against a file-sharing service even when its operators had no knowledge of specific infringements. Of course many factors contribute to the difference between these cases, but the ruling in myVidster seems to reflect a growing recognition of a long imbalance in copyright law that needs to be fixed. Even more so, this ruling reflects an understanding by the Court of the way we actually use the Internet. It's not just about swapping files, but using the cloud, streaming, and linking. And it?s not just college students sharing data ? it?s the way people do business everyday. There?s no way to know whether this cultural shift really changed Judge Posner?s mind, but we can?t help but speculate that increased use of and understanding of how technology actually works will lead to more rulings like this one.

This case is far from over ? last week?s decision just overturns the preliminary injunction before the actual arguments begin ? we hope to see more rulings like this one that protect young, innovative companies from abusive claims of copyright infringement.

Illegal immigrants' road trip: riding a 'freedom' bus or flouting the law?

About 30 illegal immigrants set out Aug. 1 for a cross-country, 'no papers, no fear' bus trip. Supporters say the riders are highlighting the need for immigration reform. Detractors say they are thumbing their noses at the law and should be detained.

By Lourdes Medrano,?Correspondent / August 5, 2012

Leticia Ramirez, in front, and Isela Meraz, both of Phoenix, block the intersection before getting arrested by Phoenix Police July 24, in a protest against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Meraz is now one of the undocumented immigrants riding a bus to the Democratic National Convention.

They want the world to know that they are living in the United States without proper legal status, something most people in the same situation strive to keep secret for fear of deportation. About 30 students, mothers, and day laborers this week set out on a bus headed to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. that starts Sept. 3, to cast a spotlight on what they say are flawed immigration policies.

Along the way, the group plans to stop in states that, like Arizona, have adopted ? or tried to adopt ? strict laws to discourage illegal immigration. On Sunday they are in Austin, Texas, after stops in Colorado and New Mexico.

?To me, it?s about being undocumented without being scared,? says Isela Meraz, a 29-year-old bus rider. ?I feel I?ll be representing a lot of people who are afraid of coming out of the shadows.?

The riders plan to be a thorn in the side of the Democratic Party, which they blame along with the Republicans for the lack of progress on immigration reform. The fact that the Obama administration has deported a record number of illegal immigrants is not lost on them.

Still early in their ?no papers, no fear? cross-country journey, the bus riders already have stirred controversy. On Aug. 1, they were the subject of a debate in the opinion pages of The New York Times, with some expressing support for the actions of the protesters and others condemning them.

?Any time illegal immigrants advertise where they are, it seems to me that makes them high priority for detention,? says Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, which favors stricter immigration laws. ?ICE [US Immigration and Customs Enforcement] needs to pull the bus over, put them in detention, and then remove them.?

New districts and testy races for House incumbents

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Russ Carnahan and William Lacy Clay Jr. are colleagues in Congress and members of prominent political families.

They've cordially represented St. Louis for several years.

But now the Democratic congressmen are accusing one another of lying as they get ready to face one another in a primary Tuesday.

That's what can happen when two incumbents are thrown together in the same district because of redistricting.

In St. Louis and Detroit, a decades-long exodus of residents has forced the combination of districts, resulting in Tuesday's primaries.

Later this month, Republican incumbents will face off in Florida and Arizona. Those states gained seats after the 2010 census, but congressmen are competing in the most politically advantageous areas.

Nationwide, House incumbents are matched up in 11 elections this year.

The essential elements of a Roof

In today's real estate market, there are many kinds of roofs depending with what the buyer wants or needs. Many residents are replacing their old worn out roofs with new and fresh ones. For most of these residents, it is all about beautifying their homes with new great designs.

Nevertheless, they should also consider the safety aspect of these roofs. No one will be amused when his or her new roof starts to come off or collapses just a few days after installation. It cannot only be embarrassing but it could also cause injury to you and your family or guests. It will also lead to other expenses on top of what you paid the roof contractors who installed it.

Many roofing companies observe the highest standards and take precautions to make sure the roof is properly installed. However, it is important to look for a credible company instead of assuming that all of them will do the same job. One way to do that is to do research on the internet about prospective roofers before you can hire it. You can also choose to conduct an interview with Atlanta roofers and decide how credible he or she is. Ask for proof of past works the roofer has done. To get the most suitable roof services it is also good to consider the location, environment, maintenance and more importantly the cost. Regardless of the roof you will select, all types have several basic components, which are:

Structure- This includes the frame and the trusses and rafters that offer support for the decks.

Roof type- The type of roofing system you will be able to buy will largely depend on your existing roofing system.

Underlayment- They are sheets of materials saturated with asphalt, and serve as a second protection layer for the roof deck.

Roofing pitch- Pitch is the measure of the steepness of a roof, and is sometimes called the slope. Roofing pitch is a major factor in deciding what time of material you should use to ensure you have a solid and durable roof. A steeper roof is more durable since it has better drainage capabilities.

Decking- Also known as sheathing, is the process of fastening sheets of materials or boards to roof rafters to provide cover for the house.

Flashing- This is the process of laying sheet metal into the different valleys and joists of a roof to make it watertight.

Roofing cover- This is the use of material such as tiles and shingles to guard the decking against weather elements. It is often the first layer of protection in any roofing system.

Drainage- Any roof has to have drainage features such as slopes to be functional.

Nigerian gunmen 'kidnap four foreign oil workers'

Gunmen attacked a barge belonging to an oil services company off the coast of Nigeria on Saturday, kidnapping four foreigners and killing two Nigerian sailors, the navy said.

"Four expatriates are reported to have been kidnapped from the vessel. Two sailors were killed," navy spokesman Commodore Kabir Aliyu said, adding that the nationality of those abducted had yet to be ascertained.

Six naval personnel -- all Nigerians -- were aboard the vessel, which belongs to the Sea Truck oil services company, for security. Two were killed and two were wounded, he said.

The Nigerian navy has dispatched a boat and a helicopter to the area, he added.

Is getting a postdoc as likely as rolling a D20?

Is getting a postdoc as likely as rolling a D20?

I feel lucky today. In the last month, I?ve gone from all but giving up on a research career, to being offered two incredible opportunities: a fellowship in France for two years to work on a major Neanderthal archaeology project, and the chance to write a popular book combining my research with my hobbies. While both these breaks haven?t just fallen into my lap, I think it?s important to recognize how it can sometimes feel at this ?starting out? stage that our futures are at the mercy of someone else?s dice roll.

There?s been some discussion recently about the non-linear career trajectories that many in science end up forging. As an early career researcher, I?m no exception to this. Chance is something that, whether we admit it or not, plays a role in the increasingly winding paths facing scientists just beginning their postdoctoral lives (I?m including here my own field of Palaeolithic archaeology). In fact, I?d been feeling decidedly unfortunate since finishing up my PhD in 2010 as I began to realise that my expectations of ?what happened next? were somewhat na?ve in their timescales. It became obvious that it takes on average at least two years after graduating to get a postdoc or academic position.

I hadn?t expected to simply walk into a job or have funding appear out of the blue, but neither had I expected the current alarmingly low chances for attaining them. Two UK government funded sources for first postdocs (AHRC and NERC) have been withdrawn, leaving just three other bodies providing major funding (British Academy, Royal Society and Leverhulme Trust). However, with hundreds of applications from across the sciences and humanities, the success rate for all three is under 7%. As an added fun twist, the Leverhulme fellowships are not full grants, but instead require the host institution to make a matching contribution. This has led to a situation where there are hundreds of potential applicants champing at the bit, yet many universities simply state that they are not putting forward anyone at all for that year?s competition.

There are a few other small grants around, and I was lucky enough to win funding from The Prehistoric Society and the Lithic Studies Society to work on the late Neanderthal archaeology of La Cotte de St Brelade, as part of the Quaternary Archaeology and Environments of Jersey project. This was just enough to pay for a few weeks? travel and subsistence, but not nearly sufficient to record the entire lithic assemblage of c. 6000 artefacts. Frustratingly, although I have an Honorary (unsalaried) Research Fellowship at the University of Manchester- and therefore access to lab space- it wasn?t possible to bring the collection over. Aside from postdoctoral funding, securing a lecturing position at a university is just as tough a call. Even for relatively specific job descriptions, there are usually over 100 applicants, including scholars at Professor-level from abroad. This leaves the majority of early career researchers with little chance.

Some of the whole La Cotte de St Brelade collection

Some of the whole La Cotte de St Brelade collection

Two years after my PhD I could no longer afford to continue working unpaid on research projects while concurrently trying to support my household with part-time jobs (at the same time as publishing and writing applications). So in January 2012 I took the decision to get off the hamster wheel, and focus on other ways to earn a living, while keeping archaeology in my life. I wrote about these ?Plan B? options for the Day of Archaeology blogging event held in June, by which point the first of my big breaks had occurred. Through my active presence on Twitter, following people related to all my interests, I?d had an exchange with @chiffchat, a Senior Commissioning Editor at Bloomsbury Press who was just as into bird watching as me. What started as a tweet from me about Upper Palaeolithic cave art ended in June with the offer of a contract to write a book titled ?Dawn Chorus in Eden: Humanity and Birds in Prehistory?. It was lucky, certainly, that I decided to tweet on something that caught the eye of a natural history editor with a fondness for prehistoric archaeology. As science communication is something I?ve enjoyed doing for years, writing for a popular audience seemed to offer a fresh path after my stalling research career.

Within the past fortnight I?ve had my second stroke of good fortune, which has turned everything upside down in the best possible way. As I was travelling to see my family and celebrate the book, I received an email. I could see from the subject line that it was regarding an application I?d written for a Marie Curie Intra European Fellowship last summer. Although I?d been unsuccessful, it made sense that as the 2012 deadline was approaching, another hopeful applicant might contact me to ask for information. As I opened the email, my eyes scanned over the sentence ?your proposal, which was placed in the reserve list, can be now funded? and my heart literally skipped in my chest. The Marie Curie system involves writing a long and fiendishly complicated application for a project to be undertaken at a laboratory outside your country of residence. When the results were released in December 2011, although I had scored well, I was just 0.2 points below the cut-off for funding. As the final major postdoctoral grant I applied for, it seemed to mark the end of my last chance at a research career. But the Marie Curie system operates a reserve list of highly scoring projects, meaning that should extra funding become available or other applicants drop out, you still stand a chance. Almost 8 months later, I?d forgotten about the reserve system, and so receiving that email felt like opening the most amazing fortune cookie.

Lithic analysis in process, Jersey

Lithic analysis in process, Jersey

Over the past two weeks since then, I?ve been astonished at how strongly my appetite for the chance to do science has come back. In order to cope with repeated disappointment over the past couple of years, and the prospect of having to step aside from a research career, I?d forced myself to come to terms with following other paths, which although interesting, were not the same. There?s nothing like seeing stones and bones feel the breath of air for the first time in tens of thousands of years as they?re excavated; nothing like the first hesitant hours where you get to know an assemblage of tools, and start to understand the individual pieces and their part in the bigger picture. Letting go of this was an emotional process, and so the chance offered by the Marie Curie Fellowship- to work in one of the top Neanderthal research groups in Europe- led to an exhausting roller coaster of feelings. Initially I was ecstatic, then worried about being apart from my family, and unsure whether the salary would be enough after steep taxes. Finally, after hours of debating, I was sure that this was the right thing for me, and I followed my gut reaction by saying yes.

My experience of a challenging start to a research career isn?t unique; in fact it?s probably fairly typical now. It?s clear that random glitches and steps forward do occur, yet there?s another kind of luck that happens because you give it the chance. If I hadn?t decided to start tweeting, initially because I wanted to communicate about my research, I wouldn?t be about to sign a book contract. Equally, if I hadn?t chosen to give a paper at a particular conference, drank a little too much wine and enthused about Neanderthals with a senior researcher from the PACEA laboratory at Universit? Bordeaux 1, I wouldn?t have found a host for the my Marie Curie fellowship. I?m not necessarily any more deserving of the opportunities I suddenly find I have, than all the others who haven?t yet had a lucky break. However, my experience of a stalled and re-ignited science career shows that hanging in there, remembering what you love doing and gently blowing at the embers can result in success, especially if you?ve done as much as possible to load the dice of fortune in your favour.

Tips On How To Repair Your Credit History | Creative Techniques ...

Having bad credit can be stressful and annoying. It?s one of the main stumbling blocks to a successful life. A bad credit report closes doors to financial options and opportunities. But, you can fix your credit in a few simple steps and protect it for the future.

Fixing credit reports must begin with a solid working plan that you are capable of adhering to. You must be committed to making real changes in the way you spend money. Avoid buying what you don?t need. Put each potential purchase to the test: is it within your means and is it something that you really need?

TIP! With a good credit score, you can easily buy a house and mortgage it. Paying down your mortgage improves your score as well.

It is obviously somewhat difficult to let derogatory marks stand undefended, but the evidence suggests most lenders don?t use those statements in determining creditworthiness. It is possible that this can be detrimental by drawing closer scrutiny to your report.

As part of your credit repair process, it is a good idea to terminate all of your credit cards except one. Making one monthly payment will be easier than paying off different bills. By doing this, you can work towards completely paying off one credit card with a large debt, rather than working piecemeal with many smaller debts.

Minimum Payments

TIP! A lower credit score can get you a lower interest rate. Lower interest rates mean lower payments, which allows you to pay off debt faster.

When working to improve your credit, make the minimum payments to all of your credit cards every month. Your late payments on your credit cards can be reported to credit bureaus, even if your payment is a single day late. You should be seen as responsible if you make the minimum payments required.

If you find a mistake on your credit report, be sure to dispute it! Write a dispute letter to any agencies with recorded errors, and include supporting documents. Sending your letter by certified mail provides you with proof that the letter was received.

By paying all your bills off you are on a good start to repairing your credit. Credit counseling can also be useful.

TIP! If you need to repair your credit score, you should pay your credit card balances as fast as possible. Pay off accounts with the highest interest rates first.

Always get a plan in writing if you are going to do a payment plan that deals with creditors. This is the only way that you have of protecting yourself. As soon as you get it paid off, have that in writing so you are able to inform the credit reporting agencies.

Review your credit report with care to make sure there are no discrepancies. Mistakes do occur, and it?s possible issues will arise from errors in your file. You can dispute this issue which, when approved, could be removed from your credit. Know that doing this is easy, but it could be time consuming.

Keeping an active savings or checking account at a local bank is a great way to begin repairing any credit damage. These accounts will give lenders proof that you can manage your money well and have a reliable source of income. Keeping your bank accounts in good standing is a signal of responsibility to potential lenders.

Credit Score

If you need to build up your credit score quickly, try buying something on credit and then paying it back fast. This type of action will show that you are responsible about your finances, and raise your credit score.

One way to increase your credit score is to become a member at a credit union. Credit unions often offer better interest and more options than chain banks do.

TIP! An unfavorable credit score can be brought about by multiple outstanding accounts and no means of settling those debts. Split your available funds and make sure that you make payments on each of your debts.

Give your creditors a call and negotiate payment plans for bills that you can?t pay in full. If you make the first move and hash out a payment plan sometimes they won?t even report it to credit agencies. By doing this, you will now be able to focus on debt accounts that don?t give you the freedom of establishing a payment plan.

You should devise a plan to get your debts paid off. Even after you pay them off, they will still be present on your credit rating, but at least they will show up as paid and will not continue to harm your rating.

The tips within this article will help you repair your credit score and continue to have control over your debts. The time you invest learning about ways to repair credit can be fruitful in improving your credit rating

Is Any Group Challenging the Canadian Prime Minister's Efforts to Weaken Environmental Protections?

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, POWER POLITICS: Green leaders say Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's motives for weakening environmental protections stem from his interest in expanding and exploiting Canada's tar sands oil and gas deposits, which constitute the second-largest petroleum reserve in the world (after Saudi Arabia's). Dear EarthTalk: Why were some environmental Web sites blacked out all day back on June 4? Was this some sort of protest or did they get hacked??Ned Cooper, Detroit

It wasn?t hackers this time. In fact, a group of environmental and social justice organizations representing millions of Canadians blacked out their websites for 24 hours this past June 4 to protest efforts by Canada?s conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper to push through a budget bill that would significantly weaken environmental protections.

Organizations leading the black-out include the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, the David Suzuki Foundation, Ecojustice, Greenpeace, Nature Canada, Sierra Club Canada and World Wildlife Fund Canada, and several others. More than 13,000 other websites?including those of many major U.S. green groups including the Sierra Club?also participated in the black-out and continue to support the effort calling for stronger, not weaker, environmental protections. Reports the Black Out Speak Out website: ?The environmental changes are particularly undemocratic and worrisome given the extent to which the government is going to please powerful oil interests...?

Green leaders say Harper?s motives stem from his interest in expanding and exploiting Canada?s tar sands oil and gas deposits, which constitute the second largest petroleum reserve in the world (after Saudi Arabia?s). ?Harper?s attacks are happening for many reasons, not the least of which was the success of environmental groups in Canada, the U.S. and Europe in threatening what Big Oil wants most: unlimited tar sands expansion and pipelines like the Keystone XL to send its oil around the globe,? reports Michael Marx, director of the U.S. Sierra Club?s Beyond Oil campaign, on the Huffington Post website. ?He put the interests of the oil industry first and looked the other way when it came to enforcing laws about air and water pollution, endangered species and the health of downstream communities.?

Marx says that ?tar sands oil companies are destroying a pristine forest the size of England, accelerating the rate of climate change, causing thousands of wolves, bears, migratory birds, and caribou to die, and leaching toxic chemicals into rivers, as downstream communities experience a spike in cancer rates.?

According to Marx, Harper?s government is trying to disarm its opposition by threatening the charitable status (and thus the fundraising ability) of green groups who oppose tar sands, subjecting them to onerous tax reporting requirements to bog them down. ??Black Out, Speak Out? is a warning that the Harper Government has gone too far,? says Marx. ?This protest has brought together a diverse array of Canadians to defend their democracy and right to have an open debate about the future of their country.?

?Hopefully Black Out, Speak Out will mobilize thousands of Canadians and Harper will learn that it?s one thing to attack environmentalists and quite another to attack freedom of speech,? says Marx. ?If the Harper government pursues this repressive policy, it should expect the backlash to spread in Canada, the U.S. and in Europe.?

France to pressure Russia, China on Syria: Hollande

PARIS (Reuters) - French President Francois Hollande said on Saturday he would try again to convince Russia and China to support harder sanctions against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in order to break a diplomatic deadlock and prevent more bloodshed.

"I will once more address Russia and China so that they recognize there would be chaos and civil war if Bashar al-Assad isn't soon stopped," Hollande said, speaking to the press during a visit to a farm in the southwestern town of Monlezun.

"The regime of Bashar al-Assad knows it is doomed and so it will use force until the very end," he said. "The role of the member states of the U.N. Security Council is to step in as quickly as possible."

Western powers have thus far been unsuccessful in ending an impasse at the United Nations over further pressure on al-Assad. Earlier this month, Hollande said he was trying to persuade Russia and China to forgo their insistence on shielding the leader from additional sanctions.
