Mike Richards teed off from the Kenora Golf and County Club Thursday hosting the first of his annual charity golf tournaments as a Stanley Cup champion.

More than 130 golfers took to the links for the annual round that raises money to be split between the Kenora and Lake of the Woods Community Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society.

?Obviously, cancer effects everybody in some way ? some more than others,? said Richards, whose uncle is a cancer survivor and the inspiration for raising cash for the cancer society. ?It?s effected me and its effects a lot of people.?

Home for the summer after claiming the 2012 Stanley Cup title in his first year as an LA King, after being dealt from the Philadelphia Flyers last summer, Richards gave a nod to the community he grew up in and said its that support that brings him back every summer.

The championship is ?obviously well embraced by the community,? he said. ?To see all the signs during the playoffs is pretty cool and neat and to come back and feel the support, obviously, is something special, too.

?Some of the reason I come back every summer is the community has been so good to me,? he said, noting he wants to reciprocate that support through the community foundation.

In the first two years, the tourney collected a combined more than $50,00 ? $11,000 in 2010 and $42,000 in 2011 ? through silent and live draws, sponsorships and entry fees from golfers looking to walk the course with a handful of former and current NHLers.

In Kenora this week along with Richards was fellow cup-winner Jeff Carter, Red Wing Ian White, Penguin Arron Asham and former pros Rick St. Croix and Stew Gavin, among others.

The round of golf was followed by a banquet and auctions in the club house.

The tournament was the first big event of the summer for Richards, who will bring the Stenley Cup to town Aug. 18 for his day with hockey?s holy grail.

?It?s something you obviously look forward to as soon as you start playing hockey,? he said. ?You?ve got so long to think about it and then the time comes and you want to make sure everything is set up perfectly.

You don?t want to disappoint anyone but, at the same time, this is something I?ve been looking forward to my whole life, so It?s going to be something I?m going to try and enjoy as much as possible with my family and friends.?
